The Etiology. of Cerebral Palsy

Abstract
The author surveyed 300 children with cerebral palsy born between the period of 1922 and 1952, who consulted and were under the care of the C. C. S (crippled child school) of Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, New York and as to the etiological factors of this disease the following results were obtained.
1) Ther incidence of cerebral palsy was rather high during the social, disaster such as war.
2) The etiological factors attributable to its occurrence was found to be 28.0% in prenatal period, 67.7% in natal period, and 4.3I /D in postnatal period.
3) In 17,760 of this disease -was detected the hereditary factors ant ongenital defects, and careful scrutiny of other family members disclosed that in 3 3% the mental retardation, in 3.7% the epilepsia, while in 3: 7% the cerebral palsy.
4) The intoxication and infection during the pregnancy resulted in, 3.3 % occurrence of this disease.
5) That the children of younger mother has the higher incidence of this disorder could not be confirmed in our survey.
6) The male showed slightly higher incidence, of 58.0%.
7) The incidence in first offspring was high(50.3% )
8) The frequency in twins was only 2.7%, which is not in accord with other statistics of higher rate
9) The uterine hemorrhage during pregnancy was followed by theoccurrence of only 1.0%.
10) The history of abortion before and after the delivery of the palsied children was noted in 19.7% of all.
11) In 6.0% of this disease the.RH incompatibility was noted.
12) The apparent brain injury at the time of delivery was elicited in 6.7%.
13) In 42.0% the delivery itself was other than normal.
1.4) The lesion was recognized in 19.0% of premature delivery or low weighted children with full terms.
15) The incidence of the disease, apparently originating from the sequela of lesion of central nervous system ranged 3.0%
16) In 6.3% the evidence, of hypoxia was demonstrated.
